I’ll be the big bad wolf You’ll be a little sheep (fit for me to fleece) This ain’t a country it’s a buffet for a predator I’m trying to get my chops in deep I’ll be a plutocrat You’ll be the golden goose (you’ll be the bought and sold) It’s where I go when I want to buy a government Never thought it’d be so cheap Majority Consisting of an underclass Minority rule dictated by the upperclass Power kept through disenfranchising the subaltern It’s come before But somehow there’s no lesson learned This is rule by thieves This is the gentrified state (a goddamn disgrace!) Get on your knees and fellate the robber baron class It’s American Sham-ocracy! It’s American Kleptocracy! It’s American Autocracy!

Lifers 01:58
she has a tat that reads, "that which nourishes also destroys" sometimes I think that I relate a bit too much sometimes I wish the nights would stretch on like an interstate sometimes the mornings get a little bit rough she says it's harder to afford all of her habits on a waitress’ salary and the last time we got off, she said I'm pretty sure we're lifers with this shit 5 finger discount on a bottle of Cabernet she said I'm doing good but for a while I was in a real dark place I lie awake some nights for hours like I don't have a bed I think about all of the others and it screws with my head first time I saw her, we were drinking from a hip flask doing 90 in the carpool lane she says she likes the after-hours when the bar lights look like dust in the rain and I'm afraid I must confess I don't remember if we kissed but if we didn't, well I sure as hell regret it circus tricks and petty crimes these pissant clubs, more dead alive I fucked things up I guess a dozen times

Juan detained at the border trekking from El Salvador 12 years old and so afraid his family did implore “Juan get the fuck out of SS (San Salvador)” His brother shot by gangs they said “Mata, viola, controla” so he rode on the top of a train 2000 miles to el rio his body caked in dirt he had half a loaf of pan but he gave it to an eight year old girl Picked up on the road to El Paso Juan swallows down his fear “you don’t have to go home but you can’t stay right here” can we please find a way? can we please find a way? can we please find a way? can we please find a way?

I heard on the news today that waters are rising I heard things’ll only get worse If we could wrap both our hands round the necks of the other We would til we’re dead in the dirt I heard them say that we should respect the mother Nice words for a commercial dick I’m sure the money you make when you do concerts for Asia Will help when that continent sinks And I don’t think that we’re gonna pull out of this one I don’t think that we’re gonna pull out of this one ok I saw the fascists on tv with their podiums Don’t they know they’ll go down like the rest I saw the teeming crowds cry for retribution The kings they chose mostly undressed With buckets I’d put water back in the ocean but the holes in the ship are too big Think I’ll go to my grave wishing for a forgiveness I never would ask you to give And I’m sorry you know that the world won’t get better I’m sorry you know that the world won’t get better this time We’ll strap ourselves in in the back of our minds Some will kick but they’ll succumb in time But hold the look in your eyes When you’re young and alive And by god I do hope you survive

about

Jon, Josh and I started playing together just about 10 years ago. Since then, we’ve played dozens of bars and clubs, to empty rooms, curious passer-bys, the belligerent and hostile, and our friends. No Gentleman has had two other drummers, and one other bass player, but this is the original line-up. This is the first time we’ve recorded together since the first full-length we put out, “This is Radcore” in 2011 (Josh was also on 2015’s “Get Happy Stay Happy.”)

I wrote most of these songs while I was away at grad school. I thought maybe I would write songs for some kind of solo project, but as often happens with those, I couldn’t really get anything satisfying down. Then we did the No Gentleman reunion in 2016 with Jon, and I thought it would be fun to do another record with him. I wrote about 5 or 6 songs, thinking we would do an EP. I was thinking about calling it “D-Beats and Open Chords” since I was still working somewhat in the open chord songwriting style, ala “Get Happy.”

Then Donald Trump got elected and I got inspired to write a whole albums worth. For awhile I was thinking about calling it “SJW” as a sort of sarcastic reclaiming of it from being a pejorative by the Right, with a drawing (maybe by Ayaka) of Marina Ginestà, a lady communist fighter and journalist in the Spanish civil war. And since a lot of the songs I was writing, especially pre-election were dealing with social justice issues.

As you can probably tell, this is not a full length. The realities of trying to do a band while spread across three different towns over an entire state became too much. I’d say this is about half of the songs I wrote. I may release the other songs someday.

It has been an absolute privilege getting to play music with these fellas again!
